Catching a Golden perch on a Crown Seal Lure

Golden perch image - NSW DPI websiteGolden perch are the larger of the freshwater perch species (>23kg, >5kg - common) and are found in similar habitats to Murray cod and Silver perch.  They like lowland, turbid and slow flowing rivers, billabongs and associated backwaters and are well stocked in a number of dams.  Yellow Belly as they are commonly known, love to hang out around submerged timbers and other snags.  Golden perch are carnivorous and will either sit around waiting for a feed or will stretch their fins and hunt amongst weed beds and snags.

Golden perch are a superb fighting fish and are a popular target for many anglers.  They are very aggressive when they strike so make sure you are holding on to your rod.

The smaller fish (1 - 2kg) are a delicious table fish whereas their parents aren't as tasty but offer great sport and should be released back to the water unharmed to pop out more fish for our future generations to enjoy.

The Crown Seal Lure is a terrific lure for targeting Golden perch.  Cast amongst snags and let the lure sink  before retrieving.  Look for a likely hang out and keep casting into the same spot for a while.  Don't give up after a few casts.

Trolling a Crownie is also a productive method for landing a Yellowbelly.  Troll the lure slow and deep amongst snags and weedbeds.
