Catching a Trout or Salmon on a Crown Seal Lure

Brown trout, Rainbow trout & Atlantic salmon image - NSW DPI websiteAngling for Rainbow and Brown trout along with other salmonid species attracts more participants than any other sport in the world!

Rainbow trout, Brown trout and other salmonid species can grow anywhere up to 20kg but a fish over 4kg is exceptional.  Saying this, a 1kg fish caught in a small stream is equally exceptional.  These species are often stocked in freshwater streams through to lakes and dams.  Where these species have been introduced, they have become naturalised and can breed in running tributaries and therefore stocking is not required.  Their size purely depends on their habitat and availability of food.  Their colour is also dependable on habitat.  In rivers/streams, brown trout for example can appear very dark with many spots, whereas in a large dam they appear very silvery with few spots.

These species are carnivorous and depending on their habitat, they'll swim a lake or dam for a feed along weedbeds, the bank or snags.  In a river/stream they'll stay in one spot waiting for food to come to them.

Rainbow trout, Brown trout along with other salmonid species are an excellent fighting fish.  They make a tasty table fish but if you have enough for a feed then it is important that you release what you don't need back to the water unharmed to pop out more fish for our future generations to enjoy.

The Crown Seal Lure is the ultimate lure for targeting these species.  Cast amongst snags and let the lure sink a little before retrieving or cast and retrieve straight away as they are often found feeding close to the surface.  Fishing around dusk and dawn is the most productive time but they can be caught all day long.  Troll a Crownie too as this a terrific way to hook into a trout or salmon.  Troll along the bank of a lake or dam, especially if the water levels have recently risen.  Otherwise try around dead trees and other snags.
