Catching a Redfin on a Crown Seal Lure

Redfin image - NSW DPI websiteEnglish perch or as they are commonly named Redfin, are fun to catch and delicious to eat, despite being a serious pest in our waterways in Australia.

A great specie to introduce kids, the missus or anyone else to fishing, the Redfin is relatively easy to catch and can grow up to 10kg although more commonly caught between 1-2kg.

Redfin live in wide range of freshwater habitats from small flowing streams upland to lowland rivers and lakes and dams.  They love to school especially when they are young but will seek their own personal space as they mature.  Redfin are regularly caught amongst structure or along the bank, particularly when the water levels have risen in a lake or dam.

Redfin are carnivorous and are a good fighting fish, being a popular target for many anglers, especially when  other species aren't on the bite.  Make sure you check your local fishing regulations as many States (if not all) prohibit the release of Redfin back into the water.

The Crown Seal Lure is the ideal lure for targeting Redfin.  Cast amongst snags and let the lure sink  before retrieving.  If casting from the bank, let the lure settle for a second before retrieving just under the surface.  Having the colour red in your lure also seems to work well so use a red crown seal/bottle cap.

Trolling a Crownie is also a productive method for landing an English perch.  Troll the lure slow amongst snags, weedbeds and the bank for best results.
